With the rapidly evolving information technology, you need to modernize your IT infrastructure as well to stay ahead of the curve and complement the innovation. Moving to the cloud is a crucial step towards transforming your business digitally. In fact, 94% of enterprises already use the cloud.

However, more than 70% of on-premises server workloads are running on Windows Server and that enterprises are looking for a cloud solution that allows easier and cheaper migration of Microsoft Workloads. There are a few cloud service providers (CSPs) enterprises trust, of which the top two are Microsoft Azure and AWS.

Here, in this article, we are going to discuss some strong facts & figures related to Microsoft workload migration that will help the IT decision-makers with the most up-to-date information needed to settle on a conclusion. So, let’s walk through it step by step.

Azure VS AWS: Which one is cheaper for running Microsoft Workload?

Did you know AWS is 5 times more expensive than Azure for Windows Server and SQL Server? A recent report generated by GigaOM revealed that the Azure SQL Database incurs up to 86% lesser costs than AWS RDS for meeting the mission-critical requirements. The report was based on the research in which the throughput performance between Azure SQL Database and SQL Server on AWS RDS was tested. The price performances were studied for the mission-critical workloads that were running on the fully-managed offerings of the services. GigaOM used the TPC-E transaction per second (TPS) metric for deriving the performance. Let’s look at the results one by one. (Source: GiagaOm)

Azure Vs AWS: Price/ Performance

3-Year Reserved Instance: Costs 86% less than AWS

Azure Hybrid Benefit: Costs 73% less than AWS

List Price (License Included): Costs 40% less than AWS

Based on the GigaOm study, you can save up to 88% on the Azure SQL Database compared to AWS RDS when it comes to the total cost of ownership. Other CSPs may claim that their hybrid cloud services help you save as big as you save in the case of Azure, however, that’s not true as you need to buy the Windows Server license again for those cloud platforms. Perhaps, these are the reasons why Microsoft generated the highest revenue from cloud computing in the year 2019, in an upward trend.

Azure Vs AWS: Cloud Computing Revenue Share 2019: Statista

While the overall cloud computing market was valued at 246 billion U.S. dollars in 2019, Microsoft controlled 11.7 percent of the market that was the highest among others (Source: Statista) and that Microsoft Azure is growing consistently.

One more reason that makes Azure the most sought after cloud service provider is the accuracy it offers through its pricing model. Let’s have a quick look at the pricing models of both the CSPs.

Azure Vs AWS: Pricing Models

Though both Azure and AWS provide a pay-as-you-go pricing model, AWS charges per hour while Azure charges per minute offering a more precise pricing model that lets you create a to–the–point estimation of your cloud expenses.

The Final Words

It is going to be three decades now, businesses of every size have been using Windows Server and SQL Server for running their critical-workloads. It is the last one and a half-decade that some reputed companies like Microsoft and Amazon introduced cloud computing solutions to the world and completely changed the game of the IT landscape. We just discussed in the article how Azure is very swiftly surpassing all its competitors by providing ultimate cloud services at ultimate prices.

According to a report published by CNBC based on the Goldman Sachs survey, Microsoft Azure has an edge over AWS at big companies. At present, a whopping 95 percent of Fortune 500 companies are using Microsoft’s Azure for their cloud computing solution (Source: News Break ). You know how specific large organizations are about everything when it comes to the cloud, whether it is security, scalability or agility. Moreover, the idea is you get all this at quite a lower price by migrating with Azure. Azure in a true sense is making IT modernization happen for every business and any business.
